Make Your Own Oatmeal Packets

My children love those instant oatmeal packets, but they are REALLY expensive and loaded with stuff I would rather not eat. So I decided to make some of our own and it couldn't be any easier. We're still toying with different flavors and the exact right consistency, but here is where we are right now :)

You will need quick cook oats, and a food processor. I wanted to make the brown sugar/cinnamon flavor this time, so they are added into my photo. I also do not place into individual baggies. I use one large freezer baggie and just shake up before each use. I find that the freezer bags are a lot thicker and can be reused for longer. Saves a whole lot of money, waste, and time. An even better idea would be to reuse the canister that the oatmeal comes in, but I don't have an empty one yet :)

Place 2 cups of the oats into the large baggie. Process 1 cup of oats in the food processor and add them to the bag.

This would be your basic plain instant oatmeal. Could it be any easier?

Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Additions:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 TB cinnamon

Fruit and Cream Additions:
1/2 Cup non dairy creamer
1 cup dried fruit

Smores Additions:
50 mini marshmallows
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Birthday Oatmeal Additions:
1/4 cup sprinkles

Cookies and Cream Additions:
8-10 crushed Oreo cookies
1/2 cup non dairy creamer

To make a bowl of oatmeal, I combine 1/4 cup of mix with 1/2 cup milk and microwave for 1 min. We usually add a spoonful of maple syrup and a splash of vanilla to the end result. There are so many different variations that you could make with this. Next we'll be trying the fruit and cream variety and the smores :)

I'm a Bad Blogger

Sigh....It has finally come down to name calling. I am a bad blogger :( There should be a group for people like me. We could call it ABB (Anonymous Bad Bloggers) I often neglect my writing for things like parenting, cleaning, and cooking. I know, I know...prioritize a little!!!!

So, I have made a couple goals for myself. First are themed days. I'm hoping it will motivate me to have a topic to write about. And a commitment to write 2x per week. Do you see my writing that down? That is my pledge. Of course I have the right to go back on said pledge at anytime for any reason. That is the privilege that comes to a person with so many children. It really isn't a privilege....the children actually dictate how the day goes. Anybody with children knows that anyway :)

So here are my themed days.......

Sunday- It's family day.....I won't be writing
Monday- Make it yourself ( I already have a post written for this and a couple more in the ol' noggin)
Tuesday-Tasty (I like to cook, so now I have a place to put all those yummy recipes
Wednesday- Works For Me (anything that I have learned to make my life easier. From kitchen, to school, to  whatever)
Thursday- Thoughtful (Sometimes I like to think and ramble. I'll try to be coherent and you're welcome to see what makes me work, but beware, no one has figured it out yet)
Friday- School week wrap up (I like to know I accomplish things and writing it out helps me "see". It's really for my benefit, but you are all more than welcome to read along)
Saturday- Family Fun (Things we can do as a family to enjoy each other and build better bonds)

Let's see how long I stick with it :)

Any ideas?

Looks Like a "No Snow" Snow Day

So, we still have no snow in Maine. I'm not complaining, I'm not a big snow person. I don't ski, ride snow machines, or even ice skate. They all seem like fun, it's just way too cold!! But the kids, on the other hand, would like to see some white fluffy stuff. I think I may have left the hospital with the wrong babies :)

I decided we could do the next best thing. We'll snuggle up with stories about snow and make some hot cocoa. Let's be honest, that is the best part about Winter anyway. I have a Saydie, so Sadie and the Snowman is one of our favorites :)

And of course the hot cocoa!!!!

CREAMY HOT COCOA
Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 3 1/2 cups milk
  • splash of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half cream (if wanted, to cool down the cocoa)
Add the first three ingredients and mix together. Add the boiling water and then bring to a simmer. Keep stirring for 2 min. Add the milk. Warm to desired temp, but not boiling. Take off heat and add vanilla and half and half. Divide between 4 mugs. Top with whip cream and sprinkles for extra mommy points :)
